What Causes Kidney Failure?
Diabetes and hypertension are the most common causes of ESRD (End-Stage Renal Disease). Other problems that can cause kidney failure include: · Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and IgA nephropathy; Genetic diseases; Nephrotic syndrome; and Urinary tract problems.
When is dialysis needed?
When the kidneys function below 10 percent of their capacity and can no longer remove waste and/or excess water from the patient’s body, the patient has to undergo dialysis.
What are the types of dialysis?
The two types of dialysis are peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.
What is hemodialysis?
Hemodialysis is the process in which the blood is filtered through a machine that acts like an artificial kidney, and the blood is returned back to the body. Dialysis removes waste from the blood and/or excess water when the kidneys aren’t functioning.
What is the frequency of dialysis treatment?
It is recommended to take three dialysis sessions per week, each session for 3-4 hours.
Can a Dialysis patient travel?
Yes, dialysis patients can travel. However, it is best to find a dialysis center at your destination and take prior appointment.
